Teatime Shape Sorter

A teapot that is also a shape sorter. Four mini teacups each fit one opening in the pot, colour-matched to their hole; the lid lifts off so the cups come out again. A clear beaker sits inside the pot, so the same toy pours water for a tea party in the bath or the water tray. One toy, two ways to play — sorting first, pretend play as the child grows. At home it plays in the living room or the bath; in a nursery or classroom it is made for group play.

How to play and learn

Written by Tolo for parents and early-years staff: what to do with the toy, and what the child is learning while doing it.

1Does your baby discover how to put the shapes in the spaces of the teapot?
2If not, give verbal hints, without directly demonstrating - and see if your little one can figure it out.
3Most babies this age will need some assistance initially. Show your baby how to put the cups in the correct spaces.
4Show your infant what happens when you try to put the wrong shape in a hole. Explain that it doesn't fit using encouraging language.
5Talk about the colours and challenge your baby to show you the cup that matches the colour.
6Show your baby how to open the lid to empty the sorter - take out one cup at a time and challenge your baby to fit the cup in - using lots of praise.
7Increase the challenge by removing two cups at a time - building up to completing the task in one go.
8As your baby develops he or she will be able to sort the puzzle out independently using both shape and colour knowledge.
9Always use encouraging and supportive language and praise successful sorting.
10Show your baby how the beaker fits into the teapot. Fill it with liquid and enjoy your own little tea party!
